Well, let's get the author's name straight first. Anthony Daniels is the real name of a man who is now much better known under his pen name, Theodore Dalrymple. Daniels chose the name as sounding sufficiently dyspeptic and curmudgeonly. Well, to judge from this very early book of his, he went looking for misery and (surprise!) managed to find it!His first stop was Rhodesia, before it became Zimbabwe, and he also spent significant time in South Africa. He was a young radical, and returned to England to write an anti-South-African novel, which has blessedly disappeared, according to the author himself. "Thank God such an immature effort never went before the public with my name chained to it."His next stop was the East End of London, with all the horrors attendant on that terrifying place, and Daniels / Dalrymple has many interesting tales to tell. But I think the most interesting is the tale that is not told, the tale of Dalrymple himself growing up and reaching maturity --- and taking retirement from the National Health Service as soon as it became available, so that he could devote himself full-time to his writing.He has enemies aplenty, who think strange thoughts like this: "Dalrymple did not show enough empathy to the suicidal man in the East End" --- while reading the story will make you realize that the doctor was used as a clown and a victim at every step of the way. The great beached whale had swallowed umpteen life-threatening pills, and mooed "I want to die" while Dalrymple used every trick in his bag to get the great whale to vomit those pills up, which he finally did in a passage you may not want to read. I forget what happened to the whale, but I cannot forget the poor female with him who was counting on their marriage in two weeks. Dalrymple staggered home at 4 A.M. having accomplished little or nothing.In any case, this is excellent reading. Evidently some new publishers are bringing all of his earlier books back into print. Hooray! I love Anthony Daniels, otherwise known as Theodore Dalrymple. This is an early book about his early life, and he was different from the way I had pictured him. He's such a wise man that I thought his life must have been very purposeful and his becoming a physician a chosen life path. On the contrary, he sort of fell into it and wandered around trying to find a way to fit in and not be bored to tears or oppressed by irrational authority. I think it is this quality of not following a set path -- and being such an acute observer -- that makes him so interesting. His time in Africa is especially fascinating as he worked there during a time of change from colonialism to anti-colonialism, and relates what he experienced without political correctness. Lest this description make him seem overly earnest, his writing is also often very funny, he has a kind heart, and the book is a good read.
